The story of the new Hessenhut

oude hessenhut

On the beautiful viewpoint on top of the Goudsberg / Goldmountain there has been a Hessenhut / Hessencabine for a long time. A kind of stopping along the Hessenweg, a medieval road where hessenwagens / hessenwagons came along with their cargo. The starting point in the design for the new Hessenhut are therefore the Hessenweg and the hessenwagens. The wooden wheels of the hessenwagons, round circles with spokes and a place to rest.

The Hessenhut is situated in Luntersche Neighborhood Forest that arose from the hamlet Lunteren / Meulunteren. Exactly 100 years ago in 1915 a memorial tree was planted with a commemorative bench around it in the Luntersche Forest, for the founder of the Neighborhood Forest, notary van den Ham. Now in 2015, we also plant a tree, a sequoia, the favorite tree of a former president of the Neighborhood Forest Henri Louis Dinger, also the founder of the Pinetum. A monumental straight up growing tree that you can also find in the same Pinetum.

Also exactly 100 years ago the dome was completed. The first dome with only one floor, and which was increased in the course of the years, as it were, with the growing trees to be able to continue to watch over it. This new Hessenhut already has the desired height and the top ring has the necessary size for a mature tree. Not the object needs to grow because of the ever-growing trees, but the tree has to grow over time and in the object. The object, the Hessenhut is the site to see a tree grow. Because of the ring, as a reference point, you can experience the tree growing in the course of many years.

The wood of the Hessenhut is from the Douglas tree, called the hardwood from the north. The trees themselves are from the Neighborhood Forest.

If you drive from the Meulunterseweg up the Hessenweg you can easily see the Hessenhut, a beautiful landmark. The Hessenhut is a characteristic entrance image for the Gold Mountain, center of the Netherlands. The entire structure is situated on three levels, the top ring to experience the tree and have a maximum view of the Lunterse valley and to the distant horizon. On the ground floor you can sit in the Hessenhut or the semicircular picnic table. And down into the pit you can experience the forest and from there walk into the woods. A pit which is still a reference to the digging for gravel and the times 200.000 years ago of the glacial moraine which created the mountain.

Lunteren is a special community and if you want to create a landscape object on this characteristic place for Lunteren, it can only happen in conjunction with that particular community. Therefore, we collaborated with a resource group in which 15 representatives were involved from different parts of the community. The Lunterse community has a strong alliance and a great interest in its shared history. Hence the many references to the site and it’s history in the new Hessenhut.
